Meeting with the Director General of the EU ECHO

On the 2nd of March the Director General of EU ECHO received Ret. Col. Dr. István Endrődi, the President of the European Voluntary Civil Protection Organizations Forum and the representatives of the Coordination Council of the Forum. The President of the Forum informed Chief Director Mr. Sorensen of the establishment, activity, aim and plans of the EVCPF, asking for the efficient support of the EU.


On the 2nd of March the Director General of EU ECHO received Ret. Col. Dr. István Endrődi, the President of the European Voluntary Civil Protection Organizations Forum and the representatives of the Coordination Council of the Forum. The President of the Forum informed Chief Director Mr. Sorensen of the establishment, activity, aim and plans of the EVCPF, asking for the efficient support of the EU.
 
At the meeting the following persons participated, in representation of the Coordination Council of the EVCPF:
  • Ret. Col. Dr. István Endrődi, President of the Coordination Council;
  • Ret. Col. Dr. Imre Ország, organizer of the EVCPF;
  • Mrs. Moya Wood-Heath, member of the Coordination council, civil protection/emergency management advisor of the EU Red Cross Office;
  • Mrs. Gabi Grafjodi, second secretary, Permanent Representation of Hugary to EU
On the part of the EU, under the leadership of Mr. Director General Claus Sorensen, the representatives of the Directorate A/5 and B/1 and the liaison officer of the European Voluntary Humanitarian Staff (EVHAC) participated. Mr. President Dr. Endrődi gave detailed information of the establishment of the EVCPF, the decisions of the statutory Conference of last year, the member organizing activity after the Conference, the role of voluntarism in the field of civil protection, the significance of the cooperation of the civilian organizations, and the plan of the conference of the year 2012. In his information he presented in detail the significance of the activity of the Regional Partnership Cooperations asking for the many-sided support of the EVCPF by the EU. Simultaneously he invited the Director General and colleagues for the Meeting of the EVCPF in Budapest in autumn.
 
Mrs. Moya Wood-Heath pointed out in her contribution that the quick enlargement of the membership of the EVCPF also proves that the organization has had grounds at European level.
The Director General of DG ECGI received with extraordinary honour and interest the visit of the representatives of the EVCPF. His proposals, practical advises has proved that he agrees with the establishment of the Forum, supports the organization to be increased at the European level and considers extremely important the cooperation of the state and voluntary organizations. In this context he emphasized that voluntarism has help in the establishment of citizens’ responsibility and that citizens has become pillar of society. His helping intent has appeared in the fact that he will designate a contact person in the future who will follow and support the activity of the EVCPF. Mr. Sorensen expressed his intention to participate at the September 2012 Conference of the Forum. He received with special interest, from among the issues of the meeting, the results achieved in the western-Balkan Regional Partnership Cooperation since he holds the Western-Balkan events a labour of love. Related to financial support he indicated that there has been no possibility for this in a short period of time, as the EU has a budget planned in advance, however, they will examine what kind of support they can render within this.
 
He called the attention that the Cyprus Presidency will hold a European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Forum in Nicosia between 15-16. November 2012, where it would be reasonable for the representatives of the EVCPF to participate. Related to the participation in the European Civil Protection Forum  he sees a possibility for the EVCPF to participate in the event to be held in Brussels between 26-28. September 2012 in Brussels as a special guest. With this, it could be promoted that the organization be known at the European level in the professional circle of the professional and civilian disaster protection.
 
In connection with this Mr. Markus Held the liaison officer of the EVHAC told that at present he can image in two forms the involvement of the EVCPF in the program of the European CP Forum: with participation in panel discussion or as exhibitor. Mr. President Dr. István Endrődi thanked for the helpful approach and advices of Mr. Director General Sorensen. At the end of the very useful and professionally high-level discussion Mr. President Dr. Endrődi thanked the meeting through handover of a personal present.
